Aflac, founded in 1955 and headquartered in Columbus, Georgia, is one of the largest supplemental insurers in the United States. Its main U.S. underwriter holds an A+ (Superior) financial strength rating from A.M. Best, affirmed in September 2025. Aflac is best known for supplemental health coverage; it also offers whole life and term life, mostly through the workplace.
Where Aflac is strong
Financial strength is not in question — an A+ (Superior) rating is near the top of A.M. Best’s scale, and Aflac’s size and brand are reassuring for a lifetime policy. Its workplace whole life is often issued on a guaranteed-issue basis during open enrollment, meaning eligible employees skip the medical exam and health questions entirely.
Where it falls short
Life insurance is a secondary line for Aflac, behind its core supplemental health business, and its whole life is sold mainly through employers. If you don’t have access through work, buying an Aflac life policy directly is harder than reaching a dedicated final expense carrier. The coverage also isn’t purpose-built around burial costs the way a specialist final expense policy is.
The independent alternative
As an independent brokerage, we compare dedicated final expense and burial carriers for your exact age and health — the policies designed around the cost of a funeral, not a workplace add-on. See guaranteed issue options or get a quote to compare carriers in one place.
